The Kiev Pechersk Lavra

The Kiev Pechersk Lavra

The Kiev Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, is one of the most honourable shrines in the whole world. It is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Kiev Pechersk Lavra is a truly unique monastery complex! It is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. More that 43 million of tourists fr om the whole world had already visited the monastery. The Complex consists of the overground part (i.e. religious constructions) and underground part (i.e. caves).

The history began in 1051 when the monk Anatoly settled here in a cave dug in the hillside. Later on he was joined by the like-minded monks. At first, they just broadened caves but when the underground cells became too small for all brothers, they began to construct the overground buildings.

The name of the monastery was originated from these caves (the word pechera means cave in Ukrainian), while Laura is a status of huge authoritative monastery that looks like little town with own streets (besides, laura means street in Greek).

In 70th of XI century an intensive construction had begun. Thus, the following constructions have been built: the Gate Church of the Trinity, the Refectory Church and the Dormition Cathedral.

The Caves of Kiev Pechersk Lavra have been made as a system of underground corridors. They consist of two parts, i.e. Near Caves and Far Caves. First chronicles about Caves date back to 1051. Firstly, it was a place wh ere monks lived but later on it became a place for burying the departed settlers. There you can found the remains of Ilya Muromets, Nestor the Chronicler (the author of Primary Chronicle), as well as Laura incorruptible relics.

The recluse monks who devoted life to prayers lived there in some underground cells. You can see the cell windows on the corridor walls. The monks received food and drink from these windows.

There are a lot of legends about the Kiev Pechersk Lavra Caves. They say that underground passages pass under the Dnieper River and connect Laura with Caves of other monasteries in Kiev and Chernigov.
